Linux Ubuntu for Nokia

Apr 25, 2008 | Tag: Mobile service

The developers taking part in transferring of the Ubuntu Linux for Nokia operational system to the mobile architecture ARM announced about the successful transfer of two last versions of the popular Linux distributive (Feisty Fawn and Gutsy Griffin) to the mobile systems with processors ARM9 and ARM11.

The project named Handheld Mojo is sponsored by the Nokia company. The variants of Nokia Linux mobile received while working on the project can work on the real ARM surroundings as well as on the open system QEMU. The developers say that the distributives can be transferred to the regular memory cards of the SD format or installed in the mobile phone or smartphone memory. Today the ported version work on Nokia N8 and Nokia Internet Tablet, but in the latter case the device must support ARMv5EL and ARMv6EL-VFP.

According to Andrew Christina, the Handheld Mojo project manager, there were no problems with the soft. The exceptions were the program support for Java, Mono.

During his speech at the Embedded Linux Conference, Christian presented Nokia N800 Internet tablet with Ubuntu for Nokia and the graphic redactor GIMP. According to him due to the peculiarities of the distribution series Debian from where Ubuntu mobile for Nokia takes part, and also ARM core, the majority of packages were remodeled completely and some packages were changed. As a result a complete new completion of all the programs working with Linux mobile was necessary (about 25 000). For this the developers had to create a new server on the basis of ARM processors that was busy with packages completion for ten days.

Andrew Christian noted that the Debian system has good porting perspectives to many platforms and architectures, but for success the Deb packages needs to be structured in a different way. It would allow arranging a tree package with less problems while adding a couple of objective files.

In future the projects team is going to transform Ubuntu Linux mobile in such a way so that the packages would most effectively used the ARM core possibilities. (Native regime). Such a solution has a good perspective since the ARM serves as a basis not only for the mobile devices but also for the NAS servers, net devices and other equipment. For completion of this project Handheld Mojo plans to use the help of Brian Avery, the HP veteran, who was one of the first creating Linux for HP iPaq and also George France, the Linux for Nokia core developer for the Alpha architecture
